This term, Room 4 has been lucky to partner with Meridian Energy to explore the world of Renewable Energy and Twizel’s important role in powering New Zealand.

For the first five weeks of Term 3, Meridian experts joined us both in the classroom and at their offices to teach us about energy in action. We learned about mechanical and electrical engineering, how magnets and copper work together, the force of water turning turbines, and the impressive infrastructure that helps keep our country running. A huge thank you goes to our knowledgeable experts, along with Mel and Jacinda, who organised these fantastic sessions.

On Friday, 5th September, Room 4 headed out on a road trip to see renewable energy in action. We visited Lake Pūkaki, the Ōhau Canal, Ōhau A Power Station, and the Lake Ruataniwha Rowing Centre. Along the way, we discovered how hydrologists study water, saw how Meridian uses modern technology, such as underwater drones, to check equipment once inspected by divers, and learned more about the day-to-day work of power station staff.

We are very grateful to the Meridian team and the parents who joined us on this journey. We can’t wait to share our learning with you at the Junior School Assembly on 29th October!
