Fifteen talented students from Twizel Area School progressed from the Upper Waitaki Athletics competition to represent the region at the North Otago Athletics Championships, held this Monday in Oamaru.

Our athletes joined forces with students from other Upper Waitaki schools to form Zone 5, competing against strong competitors from across Oamaru and beyond.

Our students gave it their all, demonstrating determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the day. A key difference at the North Otago event was the 200m track, meaning runners had to complete two laps for the 400m race. Despite this change, our athletes adapted quickly—pacing themselves beautifully and showing great technique through the corner sections.

The High Jump proved to be a standout event for our team, with exceptional performances across several age groups:

  • Dominic Newlands (13 Years) – 1st place, North Otago Champion
  • Leithen Beattie (12 Years) – 1st place, North Otago Champion
  • Henry Scarlett (11 Years) – 1st place, North Otago Champion
  • Millie Dodds (11 Years) – Equal 3rd place

We also had some outstanding track and field results from other students:

  • Henry Waldie – 1st in 100m Sprint and 2nd in 400m
  • Aaliyah Heremaia – 3rd in 400m
  • Dominic Newlands – 2nd in Discus, 2nd in Long Jump, and 3rd in 100m Sprint

Students who placed in the top three have earned a place to compete at the Otago Primary Schools Athletics Championships in Dunedin later this term—a fantastic achievement and opportunity to represent both Twizel Area School and the Upper Waitaki region.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes for their hard work, commitment, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to everyone who competed, and best of luck to those moving on to the Otago Championships—we can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
