Following their recent school camp to Arrowtown, the Year 5/6 students have been delving deeper into the history of migration to New Zealand, with a particular focus on the experiences of the Chinese gold miners during the 1800s.

Their visit to Arrowtown’s historic Chinese Settlement provided an authentic starting point for their learning, allowing students to explore what life might have been like for the miners who travelled so far from home in search of opportunity. Back in the classroom, students have been investigating the challenges these early migrants faced, the contributions they made to local communities, and how their stories have shaped New Zealand’s multicultural identity today.

Through discussions, research projects, and creative activities, students are gaining a greater appreciation of the courage and resilience shown by those who left their homelands to start anew in Aotearoa.
