We recently hosted two kaiako from the Te Ana Rock Art Centre in Timaru who built on our students' knowledge of the historic link between lower South Canterbury and Te Manahuna, the Mackenzie Country, particularly in relation to mahika kai food gathering and rock art. Learning included the ancient river pathways of the Opihi and Waitaki, and the mōkihi canoes made of raupō (bullrush) for transporting food back to coastal villages. The kaiako, Rosemary and Donna, were impressed with the whole school welcome they were given on their arrival, with the manners of our ākonga (learners) and how welcome they made them feel, and by the interest and knowledge of our ākonga.
