Cameron's Day at Athletics

This year was the first year that Aoraki Secondary Schools Athletics provided a well thought out 'No Limits' Programme for our Supported Learning Students.

When Chelsea saw this opportunity she jumped into action and entered Cameron into the packed day of fun events.

I was lucky enough to be Camerons Support Person for the day and with my background in Coaching I couldn't help but cheer Cam (probably a little too loudly) on!

The events started with introductions and then a Special Olympic's Oath. After that, it was straight into the first event, the Standing Long Jump. Everyone with all sorts of abilities had three practice runs before all leaping off the line as far as they could with the measuring tape out. After their turn it was so nice to see each athlete turn to support the person beside them.

Next was Shot Put where we saw Cameron really come into his own. He sure has a good arm on him!

Then we had a quick break, some kai and a little more time to get to know each other. It was fantastic to see Cameron enjoying himself and making new friendships.

But with not too much time to spare Cameron found himself in the next event, Mini Javelin. Everyone was participating and supporting each other. I've been to alot of competitions over the years but none with so many warm fuzzy moments!

But the best part of the day was when all the athletes ran/walked  60 metres on the main event track. It was here that everyone got to shine. All the schools, volunteers, families and friends cheered them all across the finish line.

And I can tell you that Cameron shot out of the starting blocks and ran like the wind. Mrs Frost was there at the finish and was very impressed with Cameron's determination and speed.

What an amazing day. After Cameron had finished all his events we joined TAS's other fabulous athletes competing in a variety of events and we were very happy to return the favour by cheering them on for the rest of the day.
